Learn about the WINKLEIGH SPORT & RECREATION CENTRE, a charitable organisation dedicated to enhancing community well-being. From its inspiring beginnings to its vibrant present, explore how we're building a healthier, happier Winkleigh.
The Winkleigh Sport & Recreation Centre was born from a generous legacy - land specifically left to the people of Winkleigh for sport and recreation in 1948. This foundational gift inspired the creation of a space dedicated to commumity health and enjoyment, growing steadily over time to become the hub that it is today. It's a testament to the community spirit that envisioned a place for everyone.
During the last half of the 1900's the area was used for outdoor sports such as football, bowls and tennis. In the late 1990's it was decided to build a sports and recreation hall, which after much fund raising was finally opened in 2002. The first clubs taking advantage of the new facility were the Short Mat Bowling Club, Snooker Club and the Youth Club, all still active today.
In recent years the hall has benefited from the installation of solar panels and air source heat pumps, which as well as keeping the hall users warm, keep the running costs down.

Our Mission & Values
The 'Trusts' main goal is to provide the people of Winkleigh with an area they can use for as many different activities as possible. From playing football on our pitches, using our indoor facilities or relaxing in the biodiversity area, we aim to offer diverse opportunities for all ages and interests. We are a not-for-profit charitable organisation, run by and for the community, ensuring every effort goes back into enhancing the centre for everyone. Many people in Winkleigh may know this facility under the name of Winkleigh War Memorial Recreation Field Fund (WWMRFF) which remains its official name with the Charities Commission.
